Numbness is characterised by an area of the body that has lost sensation. There are a number of causes of numbness but all are related to the nervous system. When the nerve signals in that area are not getting the messages back to the brain numbness can be the result. Pins and needles are the precursor to numbness, where you feel a tingling in that area. Some conditions that cause numbness are very serious and not in the scope of chiropractic, such as medical conditions like multiple sclerosis or Hansen’s disease (also known as leprosy). These conditions are extremely rare. Other causes can be diabetes or even cutting off blood supply to an area such as leaning on an area for an extended period of time.
The causes of numbness that relate to chiropractic are where there is pressure on the nervous system due to poor posture and aberrant biomechanics in the spine known as a subluxation. As chiropractors we work to correct these and restore nerve flow to these areas. Unfortunately if this is not done, then it can become a serious problem and if left alone can lead to permanent damage and loss of motor control.
