Q. What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a scientifically proven natural healing therapy, that focuses on getting your nervous system functioning at its optimum, by removing interferences called subluxations. Your nervous system is the master system of the body and controls all other systems including whether you feel pain, feel well and maintains your health.  Pain and other symptoms are often an indication that there is some interference to your nervous system.

Q. Who needs Chiropractic?
Everyone at some point will need chiropractic.  Due to the fact that we all experience trauma such as falls and impacts, as well as stress in our lives in the form of work, nutrition and emotions we need chiropractic.  Chiropractic can help anyone that has a spine and nervous system.  Even animals get chiropractic care, although we do not specialise in this.

Q. Is Chiropractic care safe?
Yes, chiropractic care is extremely safe.  In fact chiropractic care is one of the safest natural therapies.  Since chiropractic is natural, it does not use drugs or surgery which kills thousands every year.  If you were to compare Chiropractic to conventional medicine the statistics show how safe it is.  Based on figures from the British medical journal there were 18,000 deaths due to medical treatment errors, there were 50,000 permanent injuries due to medical treatment errors.  These figures are from the year 2000 and it is estimated they are significantly higher now.  According to the therapeutic goods act of Australia there were 233,300 adverse drug reactions in 2010.  This figure is separate from any deaths or injuries in 2010 attributed to medical care.  Comparing chiropractic in the same year, 2010, there were an estimated 11 million chiropractic treatment visits in Australia with only 41 treatment complaints made about chiropractors.  There were no deaths or serious complications attributed to chiropractors.  With these figures in mind, the continued assertion by conventional medicine that chiropractic is unsafe is hypocritical.  According to professor Allen Terrett, “Chiropractic adjustments are among the safest procedures in the provision of human health care service, when compared to mortality and morbidity rates in medical practice.”

Q. What is a Chiropractic adjustment?
A chiropractic adjustment involves putting the body into a specific position designed to remove interference to the nervous system.  This could be a local adjustment which targets specific joints that are not moving properly or a global adjustment that looks at the posture of the body as a whole and restores this posture.  Both types of adjustments are important in restoring nerve flow to the body.  Sometimes adjustments will have the cracking or clicking noise, but a lot of the time it does not and it is not necessary for this noise to conduct an effective adjustment.  Adjustments are safe and gentle.

Q. Is Chiropractic care appropriate for children?
Chiropractic is appropriate for all ages. Babies (Neonates), toddlers and children can often be the most important ones in the family to get an adjustment. 80% of babies are born with an upper neck subluxation due to their positioning in the womb and/or the birthing process.  It is not normal for children to experience pain unless there has been some sort of trauma or there is something wrong.  Because of this, often postural problems with children go unnoticed because they have not complained.  It is important to get children’s spines and postures checked as this is the time they are developing and it is important that the nervous system is working at 100% to allow for proper development.  Children are always running into things and falling down.  For this reason it is important that children get adjusted regularly.  Any impact is capable of causing a subluxation, which will interfere with the nerve flow to the body and disrupt the normal function of the body.  One specific thing that should be checked in children is scoliosis, especially in girls and preferably before the age of 11.  Another disorder that generally starts in childhood is sheurermann’s disease.  This generally starts in adolescence, particularly in active males.  Both scoliosis and sheuermann’s can be improved if caught early.

Q. Am I too old for Chiropractic care?
No one is too old for chiropractic.  Everyone can benefit from chiropractic no matter what age.  The lifestyle of the elderly can be improved greatly by restoring nerve flow to the body.  Chiropractic is very safe and gentle, even for the elderly, with their age and condition always taken into consideration when determining what type of care to be given.

Q. For how long will I need Chiropractic care?
The length of care is always up to the patient.  There are 3 stages of care.  The first stage is Pain relief, the second stage is corrective care and the third stage is maintenance.  Once you reach maintenance, then we have corrected your spine back to as close to normal as possible.  Maintenance is designed to maintain the body at optimal wellness.  The length of maintenance is always a choice.  The longer you maintain your body the longer it will function properly

Q. What is the difference between Chiropractic and Physiotherapy?
Both chiropractic and physiotherapy are natural therapies.  Chiropractic focuses on the nervous system and works to restore nerve flow to the body that may have been impeded through postural problems and misalignments of joints particularly in the spine.  This is achieved through chiropractic adjustments and specific postural exercises.  The nervous system is the master system of the body and allows the body to function and heal properly when there are no restrictions or subluxations in the spine.   Physiotherapy focuses on the muscular system and works to restore normal muscular function.  Physiotherapy is important for the rehabilitation of muscles after injury.  This is generally achieved through exercises, massage and things like ultrasound.  It is important to note though that the reason for the muscle injury in the first place may be due to postural and biomechanical problems and imbalances which chiropractic addresses.

Q. What is a subluxation?
A chiropractic subluxation is the misalignment of one or more bones in the spine.  This misalignment puts pressure or irritates nerves surrounding the joint structure.  In particular the spinal nerves which exit the spine between the vertebrae, which are the bones of the spine.  This pressure or irritation interferes with the nerve signals travelling from the brain to the body and from the body to the brain, along these spinal nerves.  Over time this interference may lead to pain and other symptoms but also to malfunction of the organs these nerves are supplying.  This will result in reduced capacity for the body to heal and function at 100%

Q. Does health insurance cover Chiropractic?
Most if not all health insurance companies cover chiropractic in their ancillary cover.  Generally the amount covered is limited to a set amount per year depending on what level of cover you chose.  There is generally a gap to be paid for each chiropractic visit although some health funds cover the whole fee.
